I was turned onto this site from the Musical Instrument Makers Forum and I've listened with interest to the many clips from Rusty's work. The "shred" description doesn't adequately cover his work. But I've got to say, I don't hear any emotion in what's being played. Sure, it's fast and it's accurate but I haven't heard a single example that comes close to evoking the kinds of thoughts and responses in me that other skilled players can and have created. Sorry, but I'm looking for the kind of "chill down the spine" arrangements and passages that players like Steve Morse routinely create. Rusty might have that in him but it's so hard to hear in the fog of 1/nth notes flying around like so many bees on a hive. Even Paganini produced moments of introspective contemplation and I think Rusty needs to slow down and find some of that for himself.

i constantly hear people, guitar players or otherwise, cut down shredding because "it isnt musical enough" or "it has no emotion", half of these people cant really shred themselves, and the other half dont even play the guitar. to me shredding is about getting caught up in the adrenaline, a rush, or just a way of making the notes sound different, speed is a component to music just like rythm is, shredding seems to be a taboo among a lot of guitarists now, which is stupid in my opinion. my point is, dont whine about a guitarists speed. it'd be like me complaining about joe satrianis incredible knowledge of music theory or eddie van halens awsome improv skills. last note........rusty rules!!!

I've never quite understood the logic behind the "You can't do it so don't criticize it" argument. Using that logic, one could never express an opinion on anything they aren't expert in. For instance, saying you don't like a particular food dish wouldn't be allowed because you aren't a chef. No, I don't "shred" - mostly because I'm a bass player and not a guitarist - but I AM a musician. And after being a musician for over 25 years, I certainly have enough skill and experience to create an informed opinion about what I hear. If I haven't heard a good example of the type of composition I prefer, then I'll look into it further as Ibbyjunky has suggested. Besides, I thought I did compliment Rusty's skills in my second sentence but that might have been overlooked in the haste to condemn my personal taste.

Aww dude its cool, Its not that he plays to fast. Its that you hear to slow! No seriously I hear alot of emotion in rusty's playing, its called domination and I definetly feel domination when rusty administers copious amounts riff*ge to my ears. Which evokes images of post apocalyptic warfare down deep in my soul. PS I find it funny that the forum censors the word riff*ge, lol \m/ Riff*ge!

I hate threads like these, they are just so incredibly stupid. Since when has bending and vibrato, etc been the only way to convey emotion? Speed is a great way to convey emotion, whether its anger, sorrow, happiness, or fun, and these all shine through Rusty's music.
